economical mr1 replacement/upgrade steppers

Here are some brand new ones that are identical to what I use on my X and Y for $190/ea. These even have 1/4” shafts, so you can use them with the stock MR-1 couplers.

It is still more expensive. I found it worth it, but everyone has to make their own judgement.

I saw in another thread that you are running CutControl. If you are using the stock software then the stock steppers usually work pretty well too. CutControl is pretty conservative with 100ipm travel speeds and doesn’t ask a lot of out of the steppers.

I recommend Clearpath if you are switching control systems and really want to increase the machines travel speeds and acceleration. Having good telemetry from the positioning motor isn’t essential, but it sure helps to understand how it is behaving.

Thank you Sir! I agreewith you 100% that ClearPath motors are the best upgrade path. The barrier is that it will take IMO quite a bit of time & $$ to implement. It would be nice to have some other lower cost and easier swap option to replace the existing motors.

the problem i am having is if it sits for a week or so one of the y steppers locks up, a bit of tapping with a mallet frees it up and works fine till it sits a bit. that makes me think a bearing or the rotor is rusting up while sitting.

i was eyeballing nema24 before but sorta wanted something that would go right in without having to make new parts, akin to heavily modifiying a car, now regular mechanics cant figure it out and is your for life.

if someone has the dimensions on the mounts i can easily make my own before i tear it apart. mainly the height of the shaft from the base and bolt spread.

Y motor Plates.STEP (179.3 KB)

This is not the original one but you can take the dimension’s you need from it.
