Any one have any hints on cutting 1/8 hot rolled mild steel. I have a RW45 using .9 tips. I checked the cut sheet that was posted but am still getting nowhere close to the cut speeds and finish. I am getting a lot of dross/slag on the bottom and my best cut was around 55 ipm at 45 amps wit minimal dross. Thanks for any help
I did 1/8th (0.125) a couple weeks ago and got decent results 35A/50ipm and got some dross on the back but it was easy to knock off. I was using 0.8mm tips. When I had it going faster (I started at 100) I was getting a lot of flare on the top indicating it was too fast. I just ratcheted down the feed rate % until most of the sparks/flash was gone on the top.
I second that response… These are almost the exact setting I run on my razorweld and I get barely any dross. Make sure you are getting dry air from your compressor…
Are you finding better consumable life at lower amps?
I’m thinking of going lower and reducing my feed rate between cuts just to have more time to react to a tip/up and get nozzles to last longer.
The new 45xp electrodes last forever but the nozzles still take a beating.
That might be the best reason
I haven’t really done a lot of comparisons - I believe the rule of thumb is to go hot & fast. So max amperage you can with the tip you have with appropriate speed.
But I’ve got a bunch of .8mm tips which shouldn’t be used for more than 30-35A so that’s what I’m doing.
It seems everyone I ask is running 1/8” and 14g at MUCH lower speeds than hypertherm recommends. Same on the RW45
Trying to figure out what the best move is
I know the speeds for the RW45 tends to be less than the Hypertherm folks report. That doesn’t surprise me because Hypertherm has a lot more complexity designed into their torches & tips. They’re designed to optimize cuts in commercial operations which is one reason they cost more.
But I thought the Hypertherm cut chart was supposed to be pretty close to what folks would see in real life so I’m surprised people have to slow it down.
The pierce delay for the hypertherm seems off as well.
Like for 10g it recommends 0.4. But I’m cutting 11g and 0.5 is still too short, i get pieces sticking at the piece point after they’re cut so im assuming it didn’t fully penetrate before moving.
