Cutmaster 52 start issues (SOLVED)

Howdy All,
Not sure if this is where I might find some assistance…
I purchased a Cutmaster 52 that I think was used on a table. Looks like new and the PO gave me all of his used consumables. Very few used. I wouldn’t start and flashed a 70 or 75 code. I took the torch apart…I’m scary that way…and figured it had been into by the PO. The mini-micro trigger switch was not functioning. I purchased a new one and soldered it in. Now a relay would fire in the machine but still flashed the code. Found the nose cone switch was installed backword …fixed that no change. I’ve noticed that if I pulled the trigger and loosen the front cap partially the unit will fire…not good I know but atleast it made an arc. Inside where the wires are Scotchlocked for the table, I noticed that one of the wires was snipped through. Remove the Scotchlocks and soldered the wire back together. Still the same codes.

Any ideas of where/what to check next?

Thank you,
Chas

Welcome to the forum. I’ll move this to the Plasma Cutter category…

Here are the fault codes for that machine:

This machine comes in both a 1 Phase and a 3 Phase. Is there a chance it is 3 Phase?

I did check the switch on the back and it is in 1 phase. With power switch on…it shows a 70 code. After I pull trigger for a while the relay now fires but then goes to 75 code. While keeping the trigger pulled and loosening the end cap, the air will start leaking and an arc will appear.
Thanks,
Chas

What is the torch number SL60, SL100, MC60, MC100? There are unshielded consumables and shielded consumables. Unshielded ther is a electrode, start cartridge, cutting tip and retaining cup. Shielded there is a electrode, start cartridge, cutting tip, retaining cup and shield (drag or cnc).

My guess is you have the wrong consumables or trying to use shielded with unshielded or the other way around. Or the completely wrong consumables.

Also keep in mind there is enough power in the torch to kill you or burn the hell out of your hand.

Howdy Mechanical416,
Torch is a SL60. 9-8124 electrode, 9-8210 cutting tip, 9-8213 start cartridge, 9-8218 shield cup. All of the consumables are new factory parts. I’m mostly aware of the “harm to life or limb” but was trying to trouble shoot something I’ve only used in the past and a different type/brand. I’m trying not to receive a Darwin Award…
Thanks,
Chas

That electrode number does not show up on my Thermal Dynamics consumable chart. The most common are 9-8215 and 9-8214 are you sure its the right number?
What color is this plasma cutter?

It is blue and that is the number on the POs original electrodes and the number on the new ones. That is also the part number in the owners manual.

The Blue Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52 came on the scene in 2007. All the manuals do not list a 9-8124 electrode for the SL60 torch. I would get a 9-8215 electrode and see if it will pilot arc.
Anyway if it will not pilot arc the plasma cutter will need a new board and the odds are you can’t get one as its to old.

So…I figured it out. I know a guy in Billings, Mt with the same Cutmaster 52. I had him remove the torch from the machine and meter out the pins for Ohms. We figured out the PO had reassembled the torch after having it on a Plasma Table and put the trigger microswitch on the end cone and the end cone microswitch on the trigger. I rewired it and zappo…it works.
Thanks for the help folks,
Chas
