Collapsible grills

good moring everyone, have any of you guys cut or are cutting collapsible bbq grills on the PRO? I was told that the plasma cutter would warp the metal even on 1/8 PO.

if any of you guys are cutting some can you let me know if its possible.

thanks

I cut 1/8 (10ga) all the time. Keep your water table full / lapping at the part to cool it quickly after the cut and you should see minimal warpage, unless you’re cutting through cold rolled (because internal stress relief).

yea thats what i thought. have you cut collapsible grills before?

Could you elaborate on what those are? Maybe with an image of the CAD?

We had a fireplace “contest’“ on here before.

Had a few different examples.

I guess they’re not really grills per se but they’re in that ballpark.

This is cut from 10ga steel. Assembled to the right and a flat one on the left. They didn’t warp from cutting. They might warp from burning a fire in them.

I agree you would be more likely to have them warp from the fire then from cutting. Most of what I have cut is 1/8 inch and I haven’t ever had a problem with warping. I designed one similar to what @ds690 posted for the contest @TinWhisperer sponsored. I haven’t cut it out yet, I was planning to use 1/8 inch. From what I have seen it is probably the as thin as you would want to go but I have zero firsthand knowledge about it.

Unrelated: I fired up my pro for the first time in a while on Tuesday night. I had six 11–12-year-old boys in the shop. We cut out throwing hatchets. They designed their own head and drew them by hand. I traced them in fusion and we cut them out. They had their dads with them to oversee/help them doing the sharpening and clean up. We had 3 bench grinders, 3 bench sanders, 3 angle grinders and vices and 2 die grinders setup in the shop. Lots of sparks flying. My brother-in-law asked me about doing it on Sunday. It was bit of a scramble to get everything together. He didn’t get me the boys drawings till late Tuesday afternoon. I think the young men and the dads all had a good time. They are going to finish them up this week with their dads and meet next week to cut out some log rounds and have a throwing competition. I wanted to get some pics but was too busing making sure everyone had a tool to use. I’m sure some of the dads got some pics… I’ll try and get some and post them in one of the project threads.

The hardest part was getting the shop somewhat cleaned up and ready to have visitors. :grimacing: :joy:
