Bad Leadscrew on X & Y

Got some really bad leadscrews…the insides we’re all chewed up right out of the bag. Got them on (without crossthreading) but it was way more tight than just screwing them on…like really hard. I have used many leadscrews before at work and have knowledge of what a proper fit is. Any advice? Anyone use upgraded leadscrew nuts? @langmuir-daniel?

When you installed them, did you pull back on the white compression collars?

Yep. Out of the bag they looked out of spec.

Can you send a picture of one of the lead nuts installed on the leadscrew?

Here is one I installed. Didn’t install the other one yet. Previous post has a photo out of the bag.

From the picture, it appears that the white compression collar is not in the proper location, it should be positioned over the tapered section of the lead nut. If you can’t pull back the compression collar with your fingers, you will need to remove the lead nut, pull back the collar, and screw it on. I believe you will find that it will go on easily.

To be honest, this is something that we should have noted in the video, that is our mistake. However, we place written instructions in each lead nut bag that describes what to do, but admit that its not 100% effective at communicating this important step.

Awesome!. Worked just fine. Hopefully they hold up…

110% agree.

I did not realize I needed to do that until I got the whole thing assembled and was trying to level the gantry. I was having to hold the lead screw with pliers and turning the nuts with a crescent wrench. Watched the videos over & over, read the directions more than once but do not recall there being instructions in the bag with them.

Once I stumbled on the fact the white part could slide back (after I disassembled the nut & screw assembly) I dooe-slapped my forehead and it’s been smooth sailing ever since :blush:

Yeah…I’m just worried now they are comprised… I should have paid better attention. :grin:

@langmuir-daniel

Could you post a copy of the lead-screw instructions in hear?

I know is didn’t notice any. I often still refer back to the PDF instructions you originally put out.

Anyway back to the lead-screws. I know I didn’t move any plastic compression collars. I noted high resistance but assumed they should be that way. My table runs fine.

Anyone here know what type size, pitch, direction the lead screws are? I think I am going to swap out for bronze ones I found on MC Master Carr. I will measure them tonight but was hoping I could be lazy and take out the guesswork. McMaster Carr has a very good explaination on their site if anyone is interested…cheers

mc2craft, If you find the right parts less us know I thought of doing the same thing.

Hi, the lead screws are 3/8-8 4 start ACME. We source our lead screw stock from the same company that supplies Mcmaster Carr, so you’ll get the same screws you get from us. If they make bronze lead nuts for these screws, they will work, but you will lose a little bit of backlash performance.
