Arc Eye Protection

Anyone sell or designed any guards around the plasma cutter tool to shield the arc and not need to wear eye protection? Maybe a simple box out of steel that wraps around the tip?

I wouldn’t trust anything like that simply because it can’t block close to or under the material.

I went to FABTECH 2024 in Orlando and they had giant industrial machines running completely open arc. Thousands of visitors walking past plasma cutters with naked eye. I know one that was cutting very thick structural steel had a cover on it probably running way more amperage, but some others were open and I could get like 6 feet away from the arc.

That’s crazy! Inside a convention hall? Were there air quality problems?

Welcome to the forum.

Good luck with that. I’ll be ‘seeing’ you…

The only thing that you can rely on is a wall, between you and the arc. A wall that absorbs the light. Polycarbonate might if it is treated to filter UV.

I just wear my welding hood, set to “grinding” shade (about a 7).

This was inside Orlando convention center. 30 Ft+ ceilings. Show is huge and called Fabtech. If I recall correct, there were many plasma machines just cutting away.

This is my photo and I went to Controlled Automation website and that is what their plasma machine looks like.

Yea I cant be walking around all day with a welding hood on since this is in a very active shop with people walking around. Worst case I could put an enclosure with tinting to block the rays, but figured people had a common product to just connect to the torch tip.

They make shaded flap curtains you can hang around. Not sure where to get them, but I had to make an enclosure for a trade show with them at a previous job.

Whats so hard to wear glasses ?? To protect your eyes you only get one pair ??

Yea, I might just encapsulate the thing like this and block the machine from view. Maybe with layered window tint so I can at least get some small visibility instead of 100% blockage.

“Whats so hard to wear glasses ?”

Because myself and employees have other tasks throughout the day next to this workstation and also walking past it. Can’t wear shades 24/7.
