Another rapid move issue (Solved: New power supply)

I didn’t want to hijack this post, but I’m seeing something similar:

My system (crossfire pro circa Jan 2021) had been working fine, then after a week or so of not using it I ran into an issue with 200ipm jogs on both X and Y and, more importantly, rapid moves between cuts. At 200ipm and above the stepper motor would just growl and not move the axis. I hadn’t updated software or firmware for a while (I was on 20.6) so I installed 21.1.5 to get the max rapid control (and subsequently updated the firmware), which has solved the issue of not moving between cuts after I adjusted to 100ipm max rapid. I checked the DC power supply voltage and got 36.1 with my Fluke 8025 DMM.

Once upon a time I worked in electronics repair, so I used a scope to check the AC ripple on the power supply (the most common failure mode way back when) and I got about 20 volts peak-to-peak of 60Hz with some of the switching supply frequency mixed in for flavor. Note I have the probe grounded to the power supply case for this measurement.

Bonus points if you can guess my vintage from the scope model!

@langmuirsystems Is this amount of ripple in spec?

Thanks,
Jeff

The case is not a good ground for that measurement. The PS has multiple terminals for + and -, add a short piece of wire to one of the - terminal posts and use that as your ground for noise measurements.

I finally got back to fiddling with my system. As usual, TomWS is right. I had forgotten that tidbit in the many years since I did electronics, using a negative for the ground the 60Hz disappeared, only about 20milivolts of noise total.

However I had ordered a new supply since they are fairly cheap, and I’ve got 300ipm rapid moves back since installing it. I don’t have any measurements to show why a new supply fixed it, but it does seem to have made a difference. The old supply was right at 36VDC as is the new one.

So it is correct to say this is solved? Thanks for reporting back.

I’m withholding final judgement until I’ve run it for a while. I’ll try to remember to update in a few weeks.

Fair enough. You can change the title of this topic if you desire. Just go to the top of the thread and you will see the pencil. Click on it.

I’ve run a few projects through since the new power supply and things seem consistent, so I’m going to go with solved.
