2 x 48 belt grinder

I wasn’t happy with the work rest on the original plans, so I finally designed a new one. The new one tilts and also provides some support on the sides of the belt.

That’s indeed a nice grinder build! :beers:

Last year I broke down and bought the Vevor 2x82 variable speed belt grinder, I really like it, great addition to the shop. Fully tricked it out and modded it to accept the popular 2x72 belts.

Mods include: Roll cart with heavy cast concrete base and locking castors, dustproof containment for VFD, remote speed and direction controls, air blow gun, water mist, LED work lighting, glass platen, allen key storage, catch bucket, magnetic particle catchment, extended grind table, braking resistor and 2x72 modification. Large assortment of grit, polishing and strop belts. And lastly, some tweaks to the VFD configuration programming to include braking.

@ds690 Good job on the grinder build David!

I have had the plans for quite a while and now that I have a Plasma table, I think it is time I move the project up on the list.

Being new to the CNC plasma world I have a question about cutting holes for tapping. On the side plate I see there are four holes that need to be tapped at 5/16 x 11. Is there anything special I need to do? Or just cut it as is and tap the holes?

I ruined a tap on those holes.

The best thing to do is get a carbide burr in a Dremel style tool and use that to go around the inside of the hole to remove the hardened edge. It doesn’t take much, just get to shiny steel before tapping.

Some of the holes have enough clearance that is easier to drill a clearance hole and weld on a nut

Rather than trying to cut that hole with the Plasma Cutter, which won’t be a very good hole to start with, use a ‘peck’ operation to mark the holes like a center punch and drill and tap with proper tools. Search this forum for ‘peck’ or ‘center punch’, there are a number of posts describing it for whatever CAD tool you’re using.

I’ll look into the peck and center punch, I have looked for that option but didn’t use the right search term I guess.

its pretty easy to set up if you use sheetcam. I’m sure it can be done with fusion as well.
