Y rail chip guards (solution)

So i this is not my idea but i cant seem to figure out where i saw it. Its not a cover just a shield and covers up the main pathway for chips to fly into the y rail screws. Figured id post it. 1.25 in 1/4-20 bolts with nylon spacers from menards (or your hardware store) with cut down langmuir y axis reinforcement plates.

The spindle doesnt hit the covers and i cut the plates to 3.25 but i think it could have been 3.5 and had a little more coverage. Offset them forward because with spindle all the way back chips should fly onto the rails.

I did some out of acrylic posted somewhere… I also did spacers.

There was a kit sold on here that was similar to that, but also had higher walls that mounted to the gantry and which moved fore and aft with it. I have one of those on my machine and keeps the rails quite clean.

I don’t think he sells them anymore, but you could make one.

With a raised gantry you should be able to get a taller “wall” in place ?

Can you share drawings of your riser blocks? I think I have stock on hand that would work for those.

Thats nice, did you make them? I thought langmuir was going to offer 2 inch risers but i dont see any in the shop.

I had them made by rapid direct out of 4140 as my machine was in bits at the time. Had I thought on I would of had them coated.

These are 1” tall. Any taller and you will need to switch to studs as you wont get that long of a bolt through. Not with out a fight anyway.

I had them machine my servo plates too, 6160, Type 3 hard coated. Will share the files if someone swaps to clearpath servos..

Thanks. I did swap to clearpath servos, but I used a N34 servo on Z (I can share that file). I didn’t find any reason to change the mounts on X and Y, since my Clearpath servos are NEMA 23 and so were the original steppers. I like the little Mitsumi limit switch mounts that you have though, I machined little holders for that which fit in on the backside of the servo.

This is my Z, including a 3d printed spacer that I needed to add (someday I’ll machine a new mount):

And X where I’m using the original mounts, but have a little plate that I mount behind the servo for the limit switches. I actually made these for the original steppers and they aren’t a perfect fit with the servos, but they are close enough:

The couplings I used to go from 3/8” on the motor to 1/4” on the lead screw were longer then the originals, I needed to space the motor a bit further out, add in the integrated limit switch. It made sense just to draw up some new mounts. X and Y are the same.

I already had the motors from a previous project, but If I was buying I would have done the same as you on the Z to get some extra power and holding force. These ATC’s are heavier then the standard spindle.
