Inconsistent cut speed

Can anyone help me figure out why my torch behaves inconsistently?

Here’s what happens:

  • It starts at the proper speed.
  • The first cut is made correctly at the proper speed.
  • The second cut slows down unexpectedly.
  • It speeds up again for the third cut.
  • After that, all cuts are done at the slower speed, which is not what I want.

I’m using Fusion 360, cutting 3/16" material at 65 in./min and 75 PSI air with an Everlast 52i plasma cutter. Any ideas on what might be causing this?

Check the voltage at the power supply in the control box. Should be 36 vdc. Also, check the lead screw couplers for slippage— black magic marker on the coupler and the lead screw.

It could be EMI interference, too.

I don’t think it’s the power supply, that will cause the steppers to skip, not ‘slow down’. It’s an odd symptom. But I think OP has a Mach3 board from past posts so it may be the controller board acting up…
