Fusion and Window's 10 END OF LIFE January 2026

windows boxes are cheap and widely available, hence the two in my shop running little to nothing other than a cnc controller box…lol.

but @Bigdaddy2166 has a point.

But drawing or sculpting or 3d rendering on a windows machine is horrible. imo

Seriously? I’m gobsmacked!

There you go, my friend. It works, but only for 10 years. We’ll worry about Windows 27 by then.

So I had to listen to ‘squeaky’ to get that? Three easily documented steps or five minutes of You Tube Hell…

Thanks. But then…

what will you do when Autodesk tells you, sorry, you don’t have the proper version of Windows 11 because you didn’t update?

WINDOWS == Got you by the b**ls…

OTOH, sometimes that’s kind of nice…

Same here!

I have used Windows 11 on all my machines, and the updates have been turned off for about a year. So far, no issues at all. Autodesk loves my yearly credit card payment.

Tom, sometimes you have to buy a new car. I know the old one was simple and great.

The word of the day is “neophobic”

Cant he just fix the one he has? I hate buying new stuff and I love fixing old stuff, its a win win

What’s “broken” in this user’s PC?

I too love fixing old stuff, but PC can indeed be too old to bother with. I’ve got like 5-6 extra GPU’s that are worth something to those in a 3rd world country, but not worth a taco in the US

It’s a good word. However, in this case, who is the neophobe? Someone who is fed up with Windows continuous chain of crap and control or someone who continues to use it despite all the shenanigans MS pulls?

I’m considering moving from my ‘Ford F150’ to a ‘Mercedes’. Who is sticking with the WinTel hegemony?

Here’s a simple description of how to stop the updates in Win 11:

Press Windows key + R, type “services.msc,” and hit Enter.

Find “Windows Update”, right-click it, select Properties.

Set the Startup type to Disabled, and click Apply.

WHAT!? I don’t have to listen to some Hyperbolic Weenie on You Tube spending 15 minutes breathlessly telling me exactly that and demanding that I LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE and contribute to his Patreon ripoff???!!!

Good job @Wsidr1 !

Ok, y’all, I ran an experiment.

I decided it was time to see if it was possible to switch over to a MAC without tremendous pain and steep learning curve. I didn’t want to invest a lot on money in this experiment so I ordered a refurbished MAC Mini, 2018 variety with an intel I7 processor, 32GB memory (which the 3rd party supplier tried to sneak in a 16GB version), 1T SSD for the extravagant price of $380.39 tax included. I figured if this little thing could run my apps reasonably well, then a newer MAC is a shoe-in.

The MAC arrived around noon on Tuesday. By Wednesday evening I had configured, upgraded, and learned how to install and run the following programs:

FireFox with all my bookmarks,

Thunderbird with my email account setup and mail fetched,

Sublime Text

3D Connexion and Space Navigator

Blender 4.2,

Affinity Photo 2 and Designer 2,

FUSION 360 with access to my cloud files including testing opening and modifying a couple of the designs.

I can safely say not only did all work without ‘too much’ of a hitch (due primarily me learning new control keys), but, in most cases worked BETTER than my Wintel system. Blender in particular worked REALLLLLLY well with the 3D mouse. I was flipping that cube all over the place!

I had planned to put some more time in testing, but then discovered the bait and switch on the memory and have decided to call the experiment a success and I’m sending this baby back for a refund.

NET: My next computer system will be a MAC…

Dirty bastards, did they really think they could fool you?

I guess looking back that was good they did that, gave you the opportunity to return.

I’m curious would you have just kept that and used it, if it had been configured correctly?

Even if a Mac was five times more powerful than a win PC I would still never ever buy an Apple product.

All comes down to who you hate more

For me its not hate is Privacy. I do my best to work on Linux but of course it does not support Fusion. So I do my Fusion on an unconnected Windows PC. Although Fusion requires frequent handshakes to stay alive. I live in Ohio and Fly all over the state in a helicopter. The number of Data centers is staggering. Easy to identify long building with a row of HVAC almost as long as the building. So wonder my electric bill has doubled in the passed 3/years

My plan was to sell it. I figured that I wouldn’t lose too much given it’s low cost to start with (assuming it was properly configured). As it is (assuming the reseller comes through on the refund), you’re right, I come out ahead this way.

I’ll be getting an M4 Mini once the new ones come out (probably Oct).

EDIT: Looks like the refurbisher is going to come through AND I found a good deal on a new M4 Mac Mini. It will be here on Wednesday.

LOL, that was my view when I was young and could easily ‘hack’ my Wintel platforms. Now I just want solid, reliable, behavior without ‘f…ing’ updates every ‘f…ing’ week. Updates that break my configuration, steal computer time, and I feel a subscription model isn’t too far in the future.

Plus, I have hated MS since 1979, so I have a certain satisfaction of finally ridding myself of this pestilence.

Ok, here’s the new system: Mac Mini M4 with 1TB External SSD, and 2T back up drive.

The Mini has 24GB RAM and 256GB internal SSD. The interface to the external drives are 40gbps Thunderbolt 4. Benchmark on the 1T drive was ~3100MBps write and about the same for read :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

The base I 3D printed on my P1S:

It lifts the Mac 12.5 mm off of the bottom to provide improved ventilation for the system and the fins on the external SSD hang out over the base.

I have most of the critical apps and the bulk of my data (300GB) installed.

Fusion is AWESOME! My Space Navigator literally flies through any design I’ve tried on it.

A bit of a ‘retraining’ as I get used to the new keyboard controls, etc., but overall, not too bad.

So long Windows! :squinting_face_with_tongue:
