That right there is what I am afraid of: something not going right.
It was bad enough getting a new phone a few months ago so that it would pair with my new hearing aids. Finally got the phone to work right but my wife still lisps. She says she doesn’t. Well, that’s another topic!
I upgraded an older HP laptop to Windows 11 using the Rufus Utility. So far so good, I am running Fusion 360, Prusa Slicer, and FireControl. Although on FireControl I could not run the latest greatest version. I think I am using 21.1.5
You pull the trigger on this thing yet, Jim? The $200 off ends in a week…
Same boat over here. My computer, on paper, should be fine, and I might be able to figure out the 11 workarounds discussed, but it takes forever to boot, and Fusion crashes often enough to be a major annoyance, so it might be time for an upgrade. Like you, I’m worried about transferring everything over…
I did. It arrives tomorrow. Trying to configure anything close to this on the Dell website forces you to buy ECT2250 tower and at a minimum you would be paying an additional $400.
I bought my current Dell from Costco and it has been a good machine for about 8 years.
I also purchased everything on Amazon to upgrade the SSD to 2TB and to clone the operating system onto the new 2tb drive. Then I will use that program to transfer stuff.
I am not lying…a little nervous but I am not deleting anything on the current computer until I have confidence that I feel it is doing what I expected.
Just download " Aomie Back Upper" and clone your hard drive. Place the old hard drive into the new computer and transfer all the data to the new computer. It works great, and it’s free. You can buy a professional version, but there is no need.
I would buy a Samsung SSD. Best price

This will work great. Jimmy 2tb is even better.
Now you could break loose and get a 20 tb version like the TinMan. Thats were he stores all the manufacturers manuals.
I actually keep a complete SSD with my entire hard drive with Windows 11 in my desk drawer, just in case I need to plug it in and have everything saved.
I do have that program. It is what backs up most of my files but the reason it missed my wife’s files is because she likes to use the “desktop” as her filing cabinet. I had a folder with her name on it, on the desktop that was identified as a folder to backup. But she would forget to use it.
How could I find out if the Hard Drive could be swapped into the machine @ChelanJim linked up top, @Bigdaddy2166? I think it’s a pretty slow drive, and it’s at least 8 years old, but I’d only use it to store tons of photos and videos that I don’t access very often, as well as to do the initial transfer of my files to the new computer.
In my HUGE CFP troubleshooting thread, Tin Whisperer suggested I look into upgrading the chip on the motherboard in my current machine to a newer processor that IS on the Windows 11 compatibility list, but I’m wondering if the machine might just getting too old to even bother. On paper, it should still be fast, but it’s painfully slow, and I’ve already uninstalled everything that’s not essential. The Nvidia 1050 Ti that’s in this machine has more video memory (12GB) than the RTX 4060 that comes in the new machine (8GB), but I imagine the new graphics engine is probably still faster somehow!?
Either of you want to weigh in on which way I should go!?
You should just buy a new motherboard with at least an i9 12900 Intel chip. They are relatively cheap now. The Nivida 1050 has plenty of graphics cards for Fusion.
Buy some good RAM that will fit the new motherboard, a couple of SSD drives, and an 800w power supply. You will have a complete computer for many years to come. Laptops are a bad choice because they ALL have Powersaver chips now.
This whole thing will be cheaper than $1500 to $1000, even if you buy a new tower case.

Thanks for the detailed upgrade list and for thinking through the options with me via PM, John. I ended up ordering the same Dell from Costco that Jim @ChelanJim went with. After shopping around a bit, I couldn’t really find anything else “turn-key” within $400 of it’s price tag, and I’ve seen Costco sell out on deals like that, so I figured I’d better act fast.
I figure I’ll try to sell my existing tower (or at least the Nvidia graphics card, anyway) to somebody who’s a little more tech-savvy than myself.
The other thing with Costco, it can be returned in the next 90 days if you find a better deal.
But, BigDaddy, I really appreciate all the effort you put into giving advice. It was and is very helpful. I would not even know what to search for without your references.
