Will this used to check part temp or just to peek in?
Maybe you should put AC/DC ball breaker on for that operation ![]()

Yes, I can open it up and shoot my IR gun at the part without letting out all the heat. The breaker is a good idea. Hell, how much can a door be? Right.
Well, I did it. Still work in progress for a day or two. Awaiting insulation to affix to the inspection port door. Add the hinge and hasp. Probably going to make a heat-resistant knob. I will finish it up this week, I hope.
I’ll be interested to hear how it behaves from a temperature perspective. I’m pretty confident it will conduct enough heat from the inside to get more than a little toasty and gloves will definitely be needed to open and close the port. I was thinking a port that has a linked inside and outside covers the pivot on a shaft that goes through the door might be work well. the shaft could extend out with a rotation handle on the end so you’d have a way to open and close it that would remain cool to the touch plus having a setup that covers the port from the inside would help reduce the heat loss to the outer shell.
I tested it today. It was 400° in the oven for 15 min, and the temperature of the inspection port cover was 112°. I was surprised myself. I will disassemble it tomorrow and power coat the outside flange and door in Porsche silver. I have a stainless knob coming tomorrow from McMaster-Carr. I am also covering the side of the insulation with aluminum heat shield material.
This works for me. I understand there are 100 ways to do this.Ah… Nice. That set of photos makes the secret sauce more apparent. I was thinking stainless is a lousy conductor of heat, but I’d be shocked if it was that lousy. The insulation stack on the inside makes a huge difference. Nice looking mod.
All finished. It works fantastically. Almost no heat loss. Oven at 400° for 20 minutes the outside only got to 112°.
Looks great! As far as temperature. There’s already a huge hole in the back of the machine. I don’t think it will make a difference at all.
Mine has a fan in that hole. Great design, my friend. I am very pleased.
