Evening all. I am attempting to cut 1/4 mild steel for the first time after a long time cutting 14 gauge. My issue lies with the machine piercing the material. I have the razorweld 45, I have done a good bit of googling and it seems my setting SHOULD be cutting. It begins the cut and then throws up that screen saying the arc was lost. I have the THC, and machine torch. Currently my settings are 45 amps, 1 second pierce delay (I have tried 1.5 as well) I have tried between 15 and 20ipm for my cut speed. My ground is connected to the work piece as well. Any help is appreciated.
You’re probably losing the arc from going too slow. If the torch burns away all the metal in it’s path, it loses the connection to the metal and goes out.
I cut 1/4” steel at 60 IPM with a 1 second pierce delay and slow down to 60% of that speed for holes and small arcs.
60 IPM may be too fast for the razorweld, but I would go at least 45 IPM.
The large plates in this picture are 1/4” steel cut with my settings listed above. The small ones are 3/8” steel cut at 40 IPM.
Thank you, I will give it a go tomorrow but so far it has been stopping before the torch burns through the metal. Almost like it doesn’t have the umph to get through it even though I’m at 45amps
If it’s not piercing 1/4” after 1 second, something is wrong with the torch or the plasma cutter.
Can you post the first 15 lines of code, just to make sure there isn’t some mistake in the settings. You can open it with notepad and copy and paste. You can also just take a picture of the code in Firecontrol.
a bit more than 15 but it makes no sense to me

That IHS springback + backlash value is pretty high at .04”, so your pierce and cut heights are probably too high. I know that is what you get when you follow Langmuir’s instruction, but its wrong and results in incorrect cut and pierce heights. That shouldn’t cause the failure to pierce 1/4” material though. Otherwise the code looks fine and won’t be the cause of your issue.
How old are the consumables in your torch? Are they standard 45 amp consumables or fine cut?
What air pressure are you seeing at the cutter when the torch is firing?
What should my springback and backlash be?
These are the standard 45 am consumables, the originals I got with the machine and I have been running it fairly consistent since August of last year. Might have taken 3 weeks off around the holidays. As for air pressure I will have to look, I don’t remember what the guage said last night. What should I be seeing when the torch fires?
The original consumables, as in they have never been changed?
Air pressure should be about 65psi when cutting.
Springback in fusion should be zero
yes they are the original consumables
“yes they are the original consumables”
Excuse me?
There’s your problem. Does your arc look green? If it ever looks green, the electrode is used up.
Check the pierce count at the bottom of Firecontrol. Depending on your air drying setup, you need to change the electrode and nozzle at somewhere between 300-1000 pierces.
The arc is yellow but I am right up on that 1000 pierces. I am at 70 psi of air. I got it to cut by changing the springback to 0. It wasn’t a pretty cut with lots of dross but likely due to a low travel speed. I guess I will poke around on the website to get more consumables.
